Explore the AOR/pop rock sound of Spider, a band whose journey began with South African musicians Keith Lentin, Anton Fig, and Amanda Blue forming in New York with Jimmy Lowell and Holly Knight. Initially named Siren, they evolved into Spider and secured a deal with Dreamland, the label helmed by renowned songwriters Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Drummer Anton Fig's connection to KISS, through playing on Ace Frehley's solo album and having Spider managed by KISS manager Bill Aucoin, added a significant dimension to their early career.

The Band's Journey:

Spider's debut album, released in 1980, achieved healthy sales of 150,000 units, though its chart position of #130 was a disappointment in a competitive market. This led to the creation of their second album, 'Between the Lines'. Despite the pressure to deliver a hit single, Holly Knight's co-written 'Better Be Good to Me' became a major success for Tina Turner, rather than for Spider. Although the band undertook promotional activities in Europe and toured with notable acts like Alice Cooper and The Joe Perry Project, this second album did not match the commercial performance of their debut. Holly Knight subsequently departed to focus on her prolific songwriting career with Mike Chapman, contributing hits for artists like Pat Benatar and Tina Turner. The remaining members continued as Shanghai, but the two albums released under the Spider moniker are now recognized as significant AOR/pop rock offerings that deserved greater recognition at the time.
