This fourth volume in the Toccata Classics series explores the orchestral works of the Polish composer Moritz Moszkowski (1854-1925). While best known for his piano compositions, Moszkowski also created a significant body of orchestral music, much of which had remained unperformed for over a century. This recording features his sole symphony, a remarkably assured composition from his late teenage years, showing clear influences from Schumann in its rhythmic vitality and orchestral color. The Scherzo is noted for its resemblance to Mendelssohn's style. Additionally, the album includes the 'Six Episodes,' charming and energetic selections salvaged from Moszkowski's lost ballet, Laurin, which were adapted for concert performance and effectively form a 'Dance Suite'.

About the Music:
The symphony is a testament to Moszkowski's early compositional talent, displaying a maturity that belies his age. The 'Six Episodes' offer a delightful glimpse into his balletic and orchestral writing, showcasing his gift for melody and engaging rhythms.
This CD presents a valuable opportunity to discover a less-explored facet of Moritz Moszkowski's oeuvre, brought to life by the Sinfonia Varsovia under the direction of Ian Hobson.
