Description

Blue Maqams is a Latin jazz album by Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem, joined by Django Bates, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. Recorded in New York in May 2017, it brings Brahem’s compositions together with improvisation from three acclaimed jazz musicians.

The album’s title refers to maqams, the Arabic modal music system, with the musicians giving its sound a jazz-inflected character. Released for Brahem’s 60th birthday, it also reunites him with bassist Dave Holland, 20 years after their first collaboration on Thimar.

Brahem plays oud, Holland double bass, DeJohnette drums and Bates piano. The recording was produced by Manfred Eicher.
