Leif Ove Andsnes - Geirr Tveitt [Vinyl]

Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes presents a compelling exploration of Norwegian composer Geirr Tveitt (1908-1981) on this Simax Classics vinyl release. The program centers around Tveitt's Piano Sonata No. 29 'Sonata etere,' which Andsnes championed in major concert halls, calling it 'the most ambitious solo piano piece by any Norwegian composer.' This recording captures the intensity of that work alongside solo piano selections from Fifty Folk Tunes from Hardanger, Op. 150, and a selection of Tveitt's Songs performed with his sister, singer Solveig Andsnes.

Significance of the Sonata

The survival of Sonata No. 29 is remarkable, as approximately 80% of Tveitt's oeuvre was lost in a devastating fire in 1970. This sonata was preserved only because it had been submitted for publication. Andsnes describes the piece as 'gigantic' and 'very rewarding,' noting its blend of Russian rhythmic influences, French touches, and folk music, resulting in a composition full of tension in its architecture, harmony, and rhythm.
